African tales is published by Barefoot books and the project took me a year to complete. It was a great commission as some years earlier I had travelled through East Africa, collecting materials, beads, paper and all sorts of fascinating bits and pieces. These items have all been used to illustrate the book. I researched each country in great detail, visiting museums and finding African Shops all over the South of England. My creative method is to use collage and embroidery to illustrate each story, combining the colours, cloth and decorative pieces I have assembled for each country.
This was the first book I illustrated which had been a long held ambition of mine. It was a chance to combine all the elements I love: travel, amazing cultures, collecting artefacts and paraphernalia from different countries, visiting museums and galleries and of course sewing. For many years I worked in the textile industry and progressed to designing paper products such as calendars for Oxfam, greeting cards, ceramics and wrapping paper. I has always wanted illustrate books as from an early age I would only read picture books.
